Getting your Learners Permit in Massachusetts

Study ALL the information in the permit Manual

Complete the Learner's Permit Application Online

(all applicants under 18 need a parent's signature) Applications are available - on-line on the RMV webpage.

Bring the completed application to the RMV

Anytime after you turn 16 years of age, along with the three forms of ID required by the RMV (see manual)

Pay the permit exam fee

The fee is $30 and covers the cost of your exam.
Study the Drivers Manual cover to cover! Know your motor vehicle laws!
If you fail the permit test -it's $30.00 each time you take the exam!!

Information for first time drivers - HOW TO GET YOUR PERMIT

After you have followed the link above to the RMV website to First-Time-Driver information and have filled out an application online (print the application) and make an appointment at an RMV branch location to bring in your ID information and proof of residency. When you go to your appointment be prepared to have your picture taken.

REMEMBER:

When you take the permit test your photo will be taken.
This will be the picture on your ID for the next 5 years - Make sure you like the picture before they print your permit!

TO TAKE YOUR PERMIT TEST AT THE RMV YOU MUST GO ONLINE TO MASS.GOV/RMV AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT.
